How to turn on/off Windows 7 Aero (Desktop Composition)

1. open a cmd.exe session as Administrator.

2. enter the following command to turn the Desktop Window Manager service on:

• NET START UXSMS

3. change ‘START’ to ‘STOP’ in order to disable the service.

You should see the change immediately as the borders of the windows get opaque or transparent.
